ABOUT THE ARTIST.
Samantha Jean is a Haitian self taught multimedia artist from Newark, NJ. Samantha began her journey with small scale graphite illustrations; during the COVID pandemic, however, she began working with paint more and instantly fell in love with the process. Rather than focusing on how people perceive her pieces, she instead uses the arts as a form of therapy. By sharing her art, it works as a release of whatever emotions or baggage she was holding on to during the time of a piece’s creation. Her overall goal is to have viewers self reflect and come to the same place of peace that she is able to achieve while creating. By being vulnerable in her pieces, she hopes to encourage viewers to be more authentic in a world that is becoming progressively more artificial.
Samantha’s pieces rely heavily on her personal narrative. That being said, most of her work convey black women and include (but are not limited to) themes of femininity, sexuality, self discovery, spirituality, and the endless range of human emotions. In terms of Samantha’s art style, she doesn’t limit herself to one. The same way she enjoys experimenting with mediums, she does the same with her art style. Despite her pieces having specific meanings to her, she encourages viewers to interpret her paintings to align with their lived experiences because art is inherently subjective.
